Conventional liquid anaerobic digestion typically operates with a total solids content below 15%, whereas solid-state anaerobic digestion involves a total solids content exceeding 15%. In comparison to liquid anaerobic digestion, solid-state anaerobic digestion offers several advantages, including reduced energy requirements for heating and the production of a digestate with lower moisture content. The primary objective of this project was to evaluate the solid-state anaerobic digestion of poultry waste, encompassing organs, intestines, and offal meat for biogas production. The solid-state anaerobic digestion of poultry waste was conducted using biochemical methane potential (BMP) assays. The poultry waste and the inoculum were characterized by measuring parameters such as total solids, volatile solids, and moisture content. For precise analysis of the poultry waste, the Thermo Scientific⢠FLASH 2000 CHNS/O Analyzer was used to determine the carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur content. The BMP assays were performed in 250 mL bottles with a working volume of 100 mL. The substrate-to-inoculum ratio was set at 0.5. Biogas production was measured using the liquid displacement method, with sodium hydroxide serving as a buffering agent during the experiments. The results of the study demonstrated that solid-state anaerobic digestion of poultry waste yielded 760 mL of biogas. This finding underscores the potential benefits and efficiency of using solid-state anaerobic digestion for biogas production from poultry waste. Valorizing poultry waste through solid-state anaerobic digestion not only contributes to reducing environmental burdens but also provides an opportunity to harness a valuable resource for energy generation. This research promotes a more sustainable approach to waste management and explores the practical application of biogas production from poultry waste through solid-state anaerobic digestion.
