Moringa seeds offer a local and sustainable solution for water treatment processes in areas where waterborne illnesses are prevalent. In this process, the cationic proteins found in the seeds adsorb onto negatively-charged surfaces (e.g. sand) and capture bacteria and viruses from water. Previous work showed that lab scale filters can remove 8-log bacteria and 7-log viruses using small sand sizes. The purpose of this talk is to discuss practical considerations for the scale-up of these filters to be used in the field such as modeling the scale-up, removing organic matter that will block available sites and using available sand and other packing material.
