The objective of Process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals is to prevent or minimize the consequences of catastrophic releases of toxic, reactive, flammable, or explosive chemicals, by application of various elements of the management system. Most companies that implement these elements, may be at varying maturity levels in their process safety performance. However, organizations, often find it difficult to understand the maturity level of each PSM element. In order to close this gap, a model has been developed using a 4-level rating system for organizations to gauge their maturity in PSM. The rating system provides an overall maturity level based on an assessment of each of the elements within its process safety management. These maturity levels are indicators of an organizationâs strengths and weaknesses. Organizations can use these indicators as a guide to build a sustainable process safety culture.
