Progressive Approach to Promote Hazards Reporting at Grass-Root Level

Workplace Incidents often results from functional complacency and hazards blindness of workers performing routine jobs repeatedly over the time & are prone to take short-cuts or deviate from Operating procedures. Similarly, Lack of awareness in un-skilled, un-educated labor is another challenge for industries in hazard communication & reporting.

Fatimafert plant site has implemented below Safety management System to inculcate Behavioral Safety Culture of its front-line employees with few initiatives listed below;

• A breakthrough digital reporting platform (MUKHLIS – Local word for Sincere) for hazards and behaviors communication by all cadres of employees.
• Several exciting motivation programs (monthly MUKHLIS reporters, on-the-spot awards, annual awards etc.)
• Involvement of shop-floor workers in HSE committees, incident investigations, PHAs etc.
• Adding safety into DNAs through expanding HSE scope beyond plant boundaries into the lives of employees
• Promotion of off-the-job incidents reporting
• Non-conventional methods for visualization & socialization of HSE awareness
• Interactive workshops to prevent Functional Blindness & complacency
• Learning through organization of incident anniversaries

Implementation of the plan resulted in high safety ownership, low injury rate, increased productivity, capacity building and high standards of employee’s performance.

The paper will be providing insights into the previous cultural barriers, low hazards reporting, complexities involved in the system and methods to overcome these challenges and promote a safe mindset in all of the employees.
