After the initial installation, management and continuous improvement of these systems present challenges not only from a technological but also from an organizational point of view.
The implementation of an advanced digital Energy Management System (EMS) which includes capabilities for multi-period optimized scheduling, real time optimization and monitoring, deployed either as cloud-based or on-premise solutions that could be acting on open or closed loop is known to provides large benefits.
Critical is the sustainability of the EMS in the ever-evolving energy supply and demand of refining and petrochemical sites. Commercial, asset and organizational factors all change and the EMS needs to adapt to the developing environment of each enterprise meaning the type of implementation, including appropriate management structure, culture, best practices and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) needs to be continually improved.
The EMS implementation at the large and complex Eastman site in Longview, TX, will be presented as an example. It will provide insight on the initial successes achieved in real time energy management for both, cost optimization and energy related KPIs performance tracking. The case study evolves to discuss how technical asset improvements, once replicated in the EMS, provided alternative operating modes, large additional benefits and sustained optimal
