The storage tanks used to store crude oil, intermediates and fuels are subject to degradation because of the exposure to chemicals and the environment. Inspection processes are used to understand the condition of these tanks and plan for repairs or replacement. The floor of the tank is a major concern as it is in contact with soil, the product and it is not accessible when it is in service. Removing the tanks from operation, cleaning and performing inspection is a dangerous, costly and in many cases an unnecessary activity as the floor may have lasted longer. Knowing the condition of the floor with no disruption of operation is a very desirable solution.

For many years Chevron has been working with two different companies to develop these type of robotics. These systems have been tested and evaluated to comply with industry standards and our own requirements. They are now commercially available and we are in the process to integrate them in our workflows.

I will introduce the challenges and requirements for these systems, some of the business cases, the development work and the results obtained during these trials.
