Safety Culture Leadership Journey:

1980-2030, from the Culture of Denial to Operational Discipline

Over the years, different leadership segments of organizations went through multiple. At present, the increasing complexity of operations raises several questions regarding Risk Management: what is the strategic role that Senior Management must assume to ensure Operational Discipline on work fronts? What are the challenges in the medium term, taking into account the multiple actors involved? How to build a vision towards the interior of the organizations, that allows to operate understanding dangers and risks?

Due to the global vision that the company offers its place, Top Management is the segment that organically has the best chance of generating a positive impact, going through the organization in an integral way.

Transversality is a central characteristic of Risk Management (operations, maintenance, supply chain, finance, communities, among the main sectors) and that is why an integral view that starts from the high level is necessary.

Under the premise "senior management defines tolerable risks and provides insight into risk management, and the rest of the organization operates accordingly" it is necessary to deepen what is the symbolic power of the leadership role, what scope do your words have in the different geographies and work teams, and what is the importance of leading by example.

It is also necessary to answer the question about why it is necessary to promote values and an ethical view, in order to decide based on risks.

The present work synthesizes the key factors for an effective implementation of quantitative tools for the measurement of the Process Safety Culture and their frequent errors.

The present work synthesizes the cultural keys of the leadership evolution of the last thirty years and allows us to think about present and future challenges.

The cultural approach was elaborated based on the field experience and on the Core Principles defined in the first element "Process Safety Culture", of the pillar "Commit to Process Safety", in the framework of the Process Safety Management System (Risk Based Process Safety, RBPS 2007
