The absorption efficiency of sprays depends on the surface area generated by the droplets. Quantification of surface area coupled with absorption data is critical in gaining insight about spray absorption. Radial and axial measurements of drop size distributions are required to accurately estimate the surface area of sprays. This paper presents mass transfer coefficient data and drop size distribution data for CO2 absorption experiments conducted in an 8-inch laboratory spray column for multiple amine solvents. A methodology for determining the effective surface area from drop size distributions is presented. The drop size distributions are measured using a Phase Doppler Interferometer (PDI). The effects of gas rate, liquid rate, and solvent properties on available surface area will be elucidated. Results from this work will be critical in determining the overall surface area available for spray absorption in amine systems.
