Fouling in heat exchangers is a cause of severe economic losses, increased CO2 emissions and disruption to normal operations. In this paper, we will revisit in details the mechanism leading to fouling discuss the analytical techniques that can be used to unveil such mechanisms. Using practical examples we will show how basic and advanced measurements can be applied to diagnose fouling issues and identify root causes. This information can the be employed to find suitable mitigation methods.
