A caustic scrubber in a chemical plant has occasionally not been able to meet the target HCl concentration in the vent gas stream. To avoid a reduction in production rates or a complete shutdown of the plant, a rate-based simulation of column was developed and used to investigate potential column performance limitations and identify areas of improvements. The column capacity was evaluated, gamma scans were analyzed, and possible aerosol formation was investigated.
