We present our experience developing and validating a library of models for municipal wastewater treatment using AVEVA Process Simulation, an open-equation simulation tool. The library contains the core functionality required to represent a typical activated sludge treatment plant, including nitrification, denitrification, sludge production and settlement, and biogas generation via anaerobic digestion. The library incorporates industry standard ASM (Henze) and ADM (Batstone) models. Simulations can be solved in steady state as well as dynamic modes.

By drawing on other model libraries in the simulation environment it is possible to consider energy recovery from biogas, and economic analysis for sustainability. Due to the open-equation nature of the system, the models can readily be adapted or extended by the user if required.
