(142a) Classical References for the Testing and Identification of Combustible Dust Hazards

Abstract

Classical references for the testing and identification of combustible dust hazards, and the corresponding effective safety concepts are reviewed. The “go-to” NFPA standards addressing combustible dust hazards are listed with a brief explanation of their relationship with the “fire triangle”. The more recent introduction of the “Dust Hazard Analysis” (DHA) in NFPA 652 [1] and the CCPS guidelines book “Guidelines for Combustible Dust Hazard Analysis” is discussed and contrasted with the European ATEX [2] safety concept “avoidance of ignition sources”. Passing a OSHA Dust NEP [3] inspection is outlined.
