Cyclones are key equipment in fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCCU), which are used for separating the catalyst particles from oil gas or flue gas. Hence, it is very necessary to carry out condition monitoring and fault diagnosis for the running cyclone. The properties of particles vary at different positions in the particle circulation loop, such as size distribution, morphology and element composition, etc. In consequence, the particles contain much information about operation. Once the cyclone operates abnormally, the information of run-off catalyst particles appear abnormal too, and there exists a corresponding relationship between them. So, taking the catalyst particles as the carrier of fault information, this paper put forward cyclone fault diagnosis technology by extracting catalyst particle information, such as particle packing density, particle size distribution, particle micrographs etc, to build the relationship model between the cyclone fault and catalyst particle information.
