In mechanical engineering field, education curriculum in undergraduate course concentrates on the basic subjects of mechanical engineering such as mathematics, mechanics, material mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, control engineering, design, etc. Concerning the course relating to powder technology, we have a class of “Fluid-Solid Multiphase Flow” in the curriculum of graduate school of engineering.

The contents of “fluid-solid two-phase flow” is as follows;

1.Introduction: examples of multiphase flow

2.Definitions and fundamental concepts

3.Particle response time and Stokes number

4.Fluid force acting on particle

5.Fluid force acting on particle in dense system

6.Particle-wall and particle-particle interaction

7.Heat and mass transfer

8.Continuous phase flow equations

9.Modeling of fluid-solid multiphase flow

10.Discrete particle modeling and simulation

11.Numerical simulation method for continuous phase flow

This course includes basic concepts of powder technology, dynamics of particles in fluid flow, derivation of basic equations for locally-volume-averaged fluid flow, discrete particle modeling including DEM (Discrete Element Method), and basics of numerical analysis and modeling.
