Codes/Standards and Science-Based Guidance for Sustainability
Wednesday, August 12, 2009 - 3:45pm to 4:10pm
The ACS Green Chemistry Institute® has initiated a program for the development of an ANSI standard for green chemicals and green process technology. This talk will outline that initiative and give a status report on the current state of development of this new consensus standard. A large stakeholder group is working to create a standard that is similar in design to the LEED certification for green building in that it will contain categories for performance along with specific credits. These credits will generally cover the following impact area: public health and environment, energy, water, manufacturing operations, end of life considerations and social equity. The effort is designed to bring a new level of clarity and performance to the chemical enterprise and provide a tool for users to guide decisions. Whether you are trying to find the right chemical for an application or decide on the best manufacturing route, the new standard will provide guidance.
