In the early 1990's the European Union identified End-of-Life Vehicles as a priority waste stream and the Directive was introduced to protect the environment. Automotive companies are being pushed by environmental awareness and legislation to recycle, remanufacture and reuse components at the end-of-life and also to reduce the quantity of manufacturing waste generated. Within this scenario, a design framework is needed for vehicle design processes in order to develop a sustainable concept. Besides that, the role of design in modern manufacturing is becoming even more important with companies adopting design framework as a profit generating business elements and also for measuring manufacturing performance. Hence, this paper discusses about two relevant standards in this case; ISO22628 is a standard that provides a method for determination of recyclability and recoverability for any vehicle design and ISO/TS16949 is a technical specification that represents a comprehensive quality management system for the global automotive industry to achieve world class levels of product quality, productivity, competitiveness and continual improvement. Based on these standards, the framework for sustainable innovation excellence in vehicle design and development processes was proposed in order to fulfill the current needs.
