Sustainability at Procter & Gamble

Sauers, L. - Presenter, Procter & Gamble

At P&G, sustainability is defined broadly. It is about ensuring a better quality of life for everyone now and for generations to come. It is a broad definition that encompasses both environmental and social responsibility. For us, it's not just about ?green? products tied to a current consumer movement, but a systemic approach covering our total supply chain, from raw materials to manufacturing processes to the consumer.

Our disciplined, scientific approach to sustainability includes Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). P&G helped pioneer this research tool which looks at environmental factors such as carbon dioxide, energy, water consumption, and waste over the entire lifespan of a product from the creation of raw materials, to product manufacture and logistics, to consumer use, and to the final post-consumer disposal. This comprehensive approach helps identify the biggest opportunities to improve the environmental impact of products.

P&G's sustainability program is focused in 5 key areas:

(1) Improving the environmental profile of our products

(2) Improving the environmental profile of our operations

(3) Advancing social responsibility via our Live, Learn and Thrive program

(4) Engaging our employees

(5) Partnering with external stakeholders

This session will review P&G's sustainability program, with emphasis on how it has evolved from being one focused only on corporate responsibility to additionally seeing sustainability as an opportunity for business growth.
