Small, Safe, Sustainable (S#) Public Water Systems through Innovative Ion Exchange

Boyer, T. H. - Presenter, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

This project identifes ion exchange processes to treat groups of chemical contaminants and develop an ion exchange process model that incorporates multi-contaminant treatment and efficiency. The Investigator is conducting numerous combinations of bench and pilot tests, including one within a small public water system. The study design will evaluate the environmental, human health, and economic impacts of the ion exchange treatment and regeneration processes through life cycle assessment (LCA). When implemented, this project will strengthen communities served by small systems by providing safe and reliable drinking water. Results from this project will be key as communities adopt green infrastructure practices and approaches into their toolkit for protecting water quality.
