Achieving sustainability is a great challenge for most of SMEs in developing countries. Remanufacturing has been considered as a key strategy to attain sustainable manufacturing. However, SMEs which generally do not have adequate experience, knowledge, resources and financial supports are struggling to achieve sustainability in the remanufacturing area. This paper discusses new concept for sustainable manufacturing assessment framework through remanufacturing strategies in SMEs. The sustainable manufacturing criterion (e.g. reliability, greenhouse gases, life cycle cost, employee creation, etc.) are used to assess the existing remanufactured products. The improvement opportunities, including cleaner production, green technology and eco efficiency are identified to achieve sustainability of the existing remanufactured products. The aforementioned framework has been tested by conducting a sustainability assessment of SMEs remanufactured computers.
