This project is developing and demonstrating effective and sustainable technologies for treating a group of contaminants or contaminant precursors for small water systems. It is testing the ability of ferrate oxidation to solve water quality and treatment problems faced by small systems. Researchers are conducting bench-, pilot-, and full-scale tests and demonstrations to evaluate the oxidative ability of ferrate in comparison with conventional oxidation technologies to treat chemical contaminants (pesticides, EDCs, and pharmaceutical and personal care products [PPCPs]) and precursors to determine the performance, sustainability, and economic viability for use in small water systems.
