Waste water treatment plants handle large amounts of water and generate biomass. Using heat pumps the energy gained by cooling waste water stream a few degrees and digesting (or burning) the sludge generated by the plant can provide considerable energy.
The presentation will report about a method to design optimal energy recovery and utilisation schemes that are adapted to local context. Case studies at two treatment plants will show the application of this method and provide insight into how energy from waste flows of society may be put to use and waste water treatment plants can be converted to energy centres.
