This paper will present an overview of our experience in evaluating coal quality using a utility-grade software to ensure sustainable energy. The software is intended to evaluate expected emissions and fuel suitability for coal-fired power plants based on proposed fuel quality parameters. With the implementation of Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) mechanism in Malaysia, it is imperative to maintain the most economical fuel cost, at the same time providing the best quality and environmental-friendly electricity to customers. It is intended with this software that it will increase the coal availability options to coal-fired power plants, hence minimizing the cost of coal procurement. The software will also assist in reducing coal-fired power plant emission in terms of predicting emission behavior during plant operation. This will also improve plant availability and maintain security of electricity supply to the National Grid System, while at the same time move a step closer to achieving a cleaner power generation.
