2:30 PM | 4:00 PM | Panel 1: Sustainability Frameworks - what are we fighting for? Since 1987 sustainability has been described as a way to balance the environmental, social, and economic considerations related to human enterprise worldwide. Since then several sustainability frameworks including Zero Waste, Sustainable Materials Management (SMM), and Circular Economy have promoted versions highlighting slices of the whole sustainability story. None working for the whole. Each framework has attributes important to specific areas of industrial activities. Yet the solutions are in common. This session will discuss the focus areas of each framework and highlight how to fill various gaps to achieve deeper sustainability. In addition, expert panelists will discuss high-level approaches including policy suggestions that can level the playing field and move us collectively towards improved materials stewardship. |

10:45 AM | 12:25 PM | Panel 3: Measurable Progress in Packaging Sustainability Today’s seemingly important discourse about material recovery, landfill diversion, recycling/circularity, and material substitution is in fact decades old. Historically, packaging has been front and center in the material sustainability conversations. Early LCA of competing materials for packaging beverage container types goes back 50 years with Coke Cola evaluating the then new material – plastic – for conveying its soft-drink products. As both roadside and marine litter became a visible concern, it triggered the material recycling ethos as a solution to littering that continues in full force today. Yet, the solutions and actions across the value chain remain essentially the same. What’s the change we seek to make a measurable difference? Are we agreed on the outcomes? Are the actions appropriate to the issues at hand? This session will take a brief look into the history, the deep thinking that has taken place, and the actions implemented to understand what’s missing for deeper material stewardship for the industry. |
