Covestro has opened a pilot facility in Leverkusen, Germany, to manufacture 100% plant-based aniline, an essential component of insulating foam in buildings and appliances. Covestro uses a microorganism and fermentation to convert plant sugars into an intermediate product under mild conditions, then the intermediate is converted to aniline with chemical catalysts.
