Gas compressor stations face a high risk of fire and explosion due to a combination of intense heat, pressure and vibration, which can produce cracks in seals and flanges. The Gassonic Observer ultrasonic gas detector monitors fugitive gas leaks in compressor stations. The non-concentration-based gas detector responds to the airborne ultrasound generated from gas releases in open, well-ventilated areas. The device responds to the source of a gas release (rather than the dispersed gas) using robust microphone technology, so it is unaffected by changing wind direction, gas dilution, or the direction of the gas leak. It provides a detection radius of up to 20 m at a leak rate of 0.1 kg/s. The integral Senssonic acoustic self-test periodically verifies the integrity of the electronic circuitry and the operation of the acoustic sensor. Setting the alarm trigger level above the ultrasonic background noise ensures immunity to other noise sources, providing reliable detection.
