Light Unlocks a New Pathway for Nickel Chemistry

A dose of light has given nickel a new power — the ability to catalyze carbon-oxygen (C-O) cross-coupling reactions, which are important for the production of pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals.

Nickel, the lightest element in Group 10 of the periodic table, is an abundant, low-cost alternative to its periodic neighbors, which include palladium and platinum. Scientists have advanced the field of nickel catalysis, enabling nickel-catalyzed reactions to construct carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Until now, however, nickel has not been able to catalyze the formation of carbon-oxygen bonds.
