New Way to Screen CO2 Hydrogenation Catalysts

Carbon dioxide receives a lot of attention for its negative impact on the environment. Using CO2 as a feedstock for the synthesis of valuable chemicals could turn around its reputation.

Work done by chemical engineers at the Univ. of Pittsburgh could make finding catalysts for CO2 conversion easier. They identified the two main factors that distinguish a good catalyst from a bad one for the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 into liquid fuels.

“The widespread use of fossil fuels generates enormous quantities of CO2, leading to increasing concentrations of this greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, which has been linked to global warming,” says Karl Johnson, a professor of chemical and petroleum engineering at the Univ. of Pittsburgh. “The use of fossil fuels is likely to continue over the next several decades as renewable energy sources gradually become more prevalent, making CO2 capture coupled with sequestration or utilization an important near-term approach for reducing CO2 emissions.” ...(See the...
