Transforming a Carbon-Based Economy

Chemical engineers at the Univ. of South Carolina (USC) have developed a novel catalyst for the conversion of CO2 waste to methane.

According to the USC researchers, catalysis-based CO2 reduction reactions are a practical strategy to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Most such methods are compatible with existing thermocatalytic processes and industrial plant technology.

As the race for clean fuel forges ahead, technologies such as fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries, which do not rely on hydrocarbons to produce energy, have gained popularity. While these strategies generally produce less CO2 emissions than burning fossil fuels or methane, some scientists believe they are impractical for implementation in the current energy infrastructure...
