The word armor is typically associated with the rigid, unyielding defensive gear used by knights during medieval times or by samurai in feudal Japan. A suit of armor provided full-body coverage and protection, but its stiff plates offered little in the way of flexibility.
Many animals, such as mollusks, have natural armor for mechanical protection — but those are also limited by rigid and hard armor plates. Certain organisms, including some fish and snakes, have scale-like armor consisting of small, overlapping repeating elements. These can provide more flexibility.
