Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany have created noble metal catalysts composed of clusters of single metal atoms, which increase catalyst activity and efficiency.
Noble metal catalysts consist of noble metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium finely dispersed on a support oxide such as alumina or ceria. They can remove toxic components from the air through oxidation and are frequently used in emission-control applications, as well as in the production of fine chemicals.
However, noble metals are scarce, typically costing hundreds of dollars per ounce. More than half of the platinum produced yearly worldwide is used for catalysts, and the majority of this platinum, as well as palladium and rhodium, is used in pollution control devices...
