Plastic food packaging is a major contributor to plastic waste globally. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), containers and packaging make up a major portion of municipal solid waste, amounting to 82.2 million tons of waste generation in 2018 (28.1% of total generation) in the U.S. alone.

Now, researchers at Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA), in collaboration with retailer Lidl Switzerland, have developed a renewable, raw-material-based protective cover for fruits and vegetables in an effort to reduce plastic waste...
