Avian Flu Resurgence Triggers Mass Poultry Culls

June
2022

A resurgence of a particularly deadly strain of avian flu has led to the culling of millions of chickens and other poultry.

After tearing through Asia, Africa, and Europe in late 2021, the highly pathogenic influenza A strain known as H5N1 landed in the U.S. in January 2022. By mid-May, H5N1 had infected 37.55 million domesticated birds in 34 states, according to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), leading to mass bird culls. On April 28, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the country’s first case of H5N1 in a human after a Colorado man who had close contact with infected birds tested positive. (H5N1 can be fatal in humans, but the man recovered after three days of symptoms.)
