This article describes how knowledge of best practices in operating discipline can be embedded into the control environment to insure the best operator is always on the board. Embedded operating discipline allows automated procedures and responses to abnormal situations to be consistently applied with no shortcuts, even under situations of stress and fatigue. The article also describes how state-based control creates an effective human/automation partnership, enabling the control system to utilize the operator’s abilities to the highest level.
