Current policy and reforms in the downstream petroleum and natural gas sectors of the Nigerian economy are expected to boost chemical engineering practice. Similar reforms are advocated for the manufacturing sector, which includes the chemical process industry, to reverse recent decline and restore growth and vibrancy. This article discusses the history and current state of the chemical industry and chemical engineering education in Nigeria, some of the challenges faced by Nigerian chemical companies and engineers, and prospects for the future.
