Alan is the Director of Cell Engineering at ViaCyte, Inc. and has 25 years of experience in stem cell and developmental biology. At ViaCyte, Alan has derived human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines for clinical use, optimized protocols for differentiation of hESC into pancreatic cell types and developed methods for producing pancreatic cells from hESC in bioreactors. Currently he is working to apply gene editing technologies for use in future ViaCyte product candidates. Alan obtained a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, pursued postdoctoral work in Developmental Genetics at the NIH/NICHD, and was an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Riverside prior to joining ViaCyte.
