We study the assembly of artificial cells on a chip from the single cell level to multicellular architecture and communication. We will describe recent progress toward programmable synthesis and assembly of cellular machines, self-replication, memory transactions, single-molecule fluctuations, synchrony and pattern formation, as well as electric field control of gene expression.
