Multipurpose Bacterial Cell Factories: New Production Strains and Novel Tools

A number of microorganisms have turned out to be particularly suitable for industrial production processes. With respect to amino acids, Corynebacterium glutamicum, a Gram-positive soil bacterium, is the preferred host for production in the million ton scale [1]. I will present newly developed C. glutamicum strains for production of amino acids and proteins, including genome-reduced strains, and novel tools for strain and enzyme development based on single-cell metabolite sensors, FACS screening, and recombineering.
