We present here the proof of concept for a generalizable method which can be used to generate reproductivly isolated 'synthetic species'. This technology has numerous potential applications including engineering a genetic incompatibility between crops which have been modified to produce medications or industrial compounds and those which are grown for human consumption. The use of synthetic animal species may be used for the biocontrol of pests such as insect disease vectors or invasive species.
