Tuesday night, a balmy New York City November night and one of NYC's premier reception halls--Gotham Hall (formerly a bank)--provided the perfect backdrop for AIChE's IYC Gala, one of the culminating events of an unprecedented year-long celebration of chemistry and chemical engineers.
The gala served as the primary fundraising vehicle for its new energy and water initiatives, two focal points at the heart of the International Year of Chemistry.
There were 215 people in attendance at last night's gala, which raised approximately $300,000 for AIChE's energy and water initiatives. The evening got started with an elegant cocktail reception, which took place in one of two balconies that flanked the hall.

AIChE student members and advisors from New York's Cooper Union and West Point attended the Gala, thanks in part to AIChE's Scale Up sponsors, which allow U.S. and Canadian students to become members at no charge, and allow international students to become members at the rate of $7 per year.
IYC Gala Chair John Televantos (Arsenal Capital Partners) and co-chairs Monty Alger (Air Products), Michael F. Barry (Quaker Chemical), Emil Jacobs (ExxonMobil), S. Shariq Yosufzai (Chevron) worked, along with the Gala Host Committee and AIChE staff, throughout 2011 to put the gala together. Gala honorees were awarded plaques and gave their acceptance speeches after guests dined.
