Michael J. Kean, PE, graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (BSChE).  During his combined 40 years of experience in education, industry and teaching, Mike has always been committed to process safety.   Mike enjoyed a 30+ year career with Dow Chemical in Northern California.  He worked in various areas such as daily operations, process engineering, design engineering  and automation.  Mike core experience is in reaction and distillation systems.  Mike’s professional interests include advanced process control, simulation, modelling, and LIMS system management. Mike’s peers awarded him Dow Chemical’s Manufacturing Excellence Award.

Mike is a member of American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Northern California District and the North American Process Technology Association (NAPTA).   Mike has attended AIChE’s Process Safety Boot Camp.

Mike started his second career as an Adjunct Professor of Process Technology at Los Medanos College.  He quickly assumed overall responsibility as the department coordinator. Mike has taught courses such as Process Technology Equipment, Systems, Operations, and Basic Laboratory Techniques. Mike is a contributor to the NAPTA Process Systems textbooks (continuous reaction, distillation, and stripping and absorption)

Through a DOE funded grant to Stanforad University, Mike is developing a Carbon Capture Technology Course aimed at process technicians.

Mike has facilitated many sessions at NAPTA’s Instructor Skills Conferences.  Topics include integrating AI in education, leveraging LMS platforms, and enhancing hands-on learning.

In his spare time, Mike enjoys bicycle riding through Northen California’s many roads and trials.
