Sponsored Technology Workshop - Flaring Reduction – A Practical Strategy for Safe, Sustainable Decarbonization - Siemens Process & Safety Consulting

Flaring as a means of both disposal and safety is an essential process safety operation in hydrocarbon processing facilities. Effective flaring management enables safe and controlled incineration of hydrocarbons. It also can improve the economics of a facility while also meeting carbon emissions reduction mandates.

In this workshop, we look at how hydrocarbon processing facilities can improve flare management practices to maximize hydrocarbon recovery, minimize carbon emissions, reduce operating costs associated with continuous flaring and enhance a facility’s overall process safety position. Good flare management practices include, but are not limited to:

• The development of a flare minimization plan with clear and achievable flaring reduction targets.
• Maintenance of the plan with proper Management of Change (MOC) practices accommodating updates to the facility safely and effectively.
• The identification and monitoring of flaring-relevant leading and lagging performance indicators to gain adequate visibility and enable right actions by facility stakeholders.

This workshop will outline common flaring challenges and discuss available mitigations that have economic, operational, and process safety rationale for adoption. We will also provide a framework for a sustainable drive towards a low-emission operation with systematic and periodic assessment of an operator’s flaring operations to identify opportunities and implement changes that reduce demand on the facility’s flaring systems for routine, non-routine, and emergency flaring modes.
