(86b) Implementing Human Performance Improvement (HPI) in the Oil & Gas Industry: A Transformative Approach Journey

The Oil & Gas industry has long been a cornerstone of the global economy, supplying the world's energy needs. However, it is also an industry fraught with inherent risks and complexities, where even minor lapses in human performance can lead to catastrophic consequences. As such, the need for a transformative approach to enhance human performance within this sector has become imperative. This abstract explores the journey of implementing Human Performance Improvement (HPI) within the Oil & Gas industry, shedding light on the challenges, strategies, and the potential for transformative change.

The Oil & Gas industry is notorious for its high-risk nature, with operations involving the extraction, transportation, and processing of hazardous materials. Safety and operational excellence are paramount, and yet, incidents and accidents continue to occur, often attributed to human error. Recognizing this, the industry has increasingly turned to HPI as a strategic approach to mitigate risk and enhance overall performance.

This abstract delves into the multifaceted journey of implementing HPI in our organization within the Oil & Gas industry. It begins by defining the core principles of HPI, emphasizing its holistic approach to improving human performance. HPI is not solely about addressing human error but focuses on identifying and rectifying the underlying systemic issues that contribute to these errors. This approach recognizes that individuals do not inherently desire to make mistakes, and the blame should not be placed solely on the workforce.

In a journey that spanned several phases, our organization has implemented a Human Performance Improvement (HPI) initiative, leading to substantial improvements in both performance and safety. We have identified 4 main phases which includes , Phase 1: Establishing the HPI Framework and HPI Main Guidelines. The journey began with the establishment of a robust HPI framework and guidelines. We recognized the need for a systematic approach to enhance human performance and safety.

In Phase 2, the organization has introduced HPI Tools and enhancing Generative Culture modules. Building on the framework, the organization ventured into practical implementation by introducing HPI tools and enhancing our generative culture. We have identified 3 main programs targeting our front liners, middle management, and also top management.

With momentum gaining, the organization then moved on to phase 3, focusing on integrating HPI elements into our internal technical standards and incident investigation processes. The final phase marked the widespread dissemination of HPI principles throughout the organization by Producing E-Learning/Webinars on HPI for the whole organization

With every phase, our employees became more empowered and engaged in their roles, contributing to a safer and more productive workplace. The HPI success story serves as a testament to the organization's commitment to improve and to creating a better future for all employees.

The journey of implementing HPI in the Oil & Gas industry is not without its challenges. Resistance to change, bureaucratic hurdles, and the need for substantial investment are all obstacles that organizations must overcome. However, the potential benefits are undeniable. Reduced incidents, improved safety records, enhanced operational efficiency, and a more engaged and empowered workforce are among the rewards of a successful HPI transformation. Hence this paper will share the journey we have embarked since 2020.
