Uses of AI for HAZOP / PHA

Artificial intelligence (AI) provides a variety of functions, such as prediction, classification and natural language processing, that can be used in the performance of hazard and operability studies (HAZOP) and process hazard analysis (PHA). This paper describes how AI can be used to support PHA studies. Pros and Cons are addressed and practical examples are provided including the use of AI classifiers to support the generation of HAZOP / PHA metrics and analytics using big data, and the use of generators to automate the completion of HAZOP / PHA worksheets. Lessons learned from the implementation of AI for HAZOP / PHA are described.
