The Saudi YPC held a technical workshop on heat exchanger network (HEN) design and retrofit studies based on pinch analysis on March 7, 2016. Over 100 Young Professionals (YPs) registered for the workshop, which is considered part of a series of simulation workshops planned by Saudi YPC in 2016 and sponsored by AspenTech (Saudi YPC Platinum Sponsor).
YPs representing some of the most esteemed companies and academic institutions in the region attended the workshop. This included participation from Saud Aramco, KBR, YASREF, Jacobs Zate, Worley Parsons, GAP-Tech, SNC Lavalin Engineering Co, SLFE, Al-Abdulkarim Holding, and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM).
A number of YPs volunteers participated in arranging the workshop by giving a helping hand to the Saudi YPC in organizing the event, participants registration, and software installation.
During this workshop, AspenTech Consultants explained pinch analysis concepts and demonstrated the use of AspenOne Engineering tools to:
- Find the minimum hot and cold utilities requirement for a given HEN using pinch analysis
- Find the optimum utilities for the process consumers
- Find the design changes/ retrofit options to minimize the hot and cold utilities consumption in the process
- Find the capital cost for the design changes, corresponding energy savings and payback from the HEN modifications.
The Saudi YPC showed their appreciation to the participants and instructor by providing certificates of completion to participants. The workshop was well received by participants who enjoyed a social dinner gathering right after the event.
The topic of the next Saudi YPC workshop will be “Plant Design: Optimization and Feasibility Study using Aspen Plus and other Aspen software.” The workshop is planned for April 12, 2016. To keep up to date on what's happening with the Saudi YPCs, follow them on Twitter @AIChE_Saudi.
