AIChE Journal Offers Tribute to Roger Sargent

The September issue of the AIChE Journal, now available online, honors Roger Sargent, recognized as the pioneer of process systems engineering. In the issue, experts consider Sargent’s contributions to such areas as distillation dynamics and design, process modeling, process dynamics and control, optimal control and design under uncertainty, and process scheduling.

To quote the editorial,

“This fourth Founders Tribute of the Journal recognizes Professor Roger Sargent, who is widely recognized as the intellectual leader, father and pioneer of process systems engineering. He has helped to expand the scope of chemical engineering by providing a strong systems component to it, and by establishing strong multidisciplinary links with fields like numerical analysis, mathematical programming, control theory, and operations research. One of his major contributions has been to provide a strong mathematical foundation to the area of process systems engineering. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of process modeling and optimization, who has made outstanding contributions in areas such as distillation dynamics and design, process modeling, differential algebraic systems, process dynamics and control, algorithms for nonlinear optimization and optimal control, design under uncertainty, and process scheduling.”

Several of the articles in the issue are freely available under “open access" license.
