The Awards Ceremony for the 2017 Student Conference in Minneapolis acknowledged notable achievements of AIChE student members, recognizing winners of awards, scholarships, and competitions.
International Student Chapter Leadership Development Travel Grant
Six international student chapter leaders who are attending the student conference as travel grant recipients of the International Student Chapter Leadership Development Travel Grant were recognized. Travel Grants are awarded through the AIChE Foundation's Doing a World of Good Campaign.
Travel grant recipients are:
- Camila Alejandra Romero Beltran, Universidad Nacional de Colombia Sede Bogotá, Colombia
- Rabia Selin Bostancı, Koç University, Turkey
- Qistina Binti Mohamed, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia

Student Paper Competition
Seven students whose work won at the regional level in the spring were recognized as finalists in this year's Student Paper Competition, which will take place on Monday, October 30 from 8:30-11:30am.

Student Design Competition
This year’s design competition challenge was titled “Manufacturing Facility for Nylon Six-Six,” and a team of judges selected the top solutions in both individual and team categories. The Student Design Competition winners will present their solutions at a session on Monday, October 30, morning from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in Room 103F of the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Individual
- Eric Monville, Michigan State University and Adam McNeeley, University of Cincinnati — honorable mention
- Oanh Nguyen of Trine University — 1st place
Team
In the team category, two teams tied for the William A. Cunningham Award for first place. The teams were:
- Lauren Austin, Jessica Catlin, Madeline Ley, and Yen Nguyen of Oklahoma State University
- Amanda Chew-Stebbins, Samantha Bidlack, and Rachel Greene of University of Utah

Ali Alkarni of Washington State University and Michael Doane of the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, were awarded UOP's ScaleUp Award for their essay submissions on their predictions for the 2035 daily commute and the role of chemical engineers in the personal mobility revolution.

Youth Council on Sustainable Science and Technology Award
This year's Youth Council on Sustainable Science and Technology (YCOSST) P3 Award went to the John Brown University team for their work on Small Scale Shock-Proof Biogas Digesters. The Youth Council On Sustainable Science and Technology Award of $1000 is presented annually by AIChE'ss Institute For Sustainability to the competing EPA “People, Prosperity and the Planet” P3 team whose project best employs sustainable practices, interdisciplinary collaborations, engineering principles, and youth involvement.
John J. McKetta Undergraduate Scholarship
The thirteenth John J. McKetta Scholarship Award, sponsored by The Dekker Foundation went to Rachel Scroggins of North Carolina State University.
The $5,000 scholarship is presented to an incoming senior or junior chemical engineering student who is planning a career in the chemical process industries. In addition to demonstrated academic excellence, the scholarship nominee should show leadership in AIChE student chapter activities and other university activities. Learn more about this award.

Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer National Scholarship Awards
The Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer National Scholarship Award of $1,000 is given to chemical engineering students for their outstanding academic achievement and involvement in student chapter activities. The following 15 students were recognized:

Engineers Without Borders Grant
The 2017 AIChE Engineers Without Borders Grant went to students from two universities:
- Jennifer Skoog and Tom D’Auria, University of Connecticut
- Donald Gross and Christopher Royal, University of Tulsa
This grant will provide support for UConn’s program to improve an irrigation network for the agricultural community of Wereta Zuria Kebele in Ethiopia and assist in funding TU’s efforts to establish eco-latrines in Machacamarca, Bolivia.

The Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award
The Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award is presented to one student in each student chapter for the highest scholastic grade point average during his or her freshman and sophomore years. This year more than 70 students earned the prize. In addition, more than 60 Freshman Recognition Awards winners were acknowledged. Recipients of this award are individuals from a student chapter who have been most active in freshman year.
Outstanding Student Chapter Advisor Award
This award recognizes an individual's outstanding service and leadership in guiding the activities of an AIChE student chapter in accordance with AIChE principles. This year the honor went to Dr. J. Zach Hilt from the University of Kentucky, Lexington.

This year 25 Chapters received the Outstanding Student Chapter Award.
