In 2023, the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) celebrates its new class of 132 scholarship recipients, who are from 26 states and will be attending 26 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) this fall.

Dustin Davis: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Hampton University
Dustin is from Los Angeles, CA, and graduated from Junipero Serra High School. In the fall, he will be attending Hampton University as a chemical engineering major. He believes that STEM education has the power to both improve our environment and raise public awareness. Dustin is very grateful for the FOSSI scholarship and he looks forward to pursuing his passion and ultimately playing an intricate part in the advancement of technology.
Amira Hamilton: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Southern University
Amira is from Caledonia, MI, and graduated from East Kentwood High School. In the fall, she’ll be attending Southern University with plans to major in chemical engineering. She prides herself in being an active community leader and has held several leadership positions throughout high school. Her passion for STEM is intertwined with her desire to make a positive global impact. Amira is excited to be a part of the solution and utilize math and science to create effective and transformative change.
McKayla Joy Hatchell: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State University
McKayla Joy Hatchell is from San Antonio, TX, and graduated summa cum laude from Reagan High School. Throughout high school, she participated in many extracurricular activities and held several leadership positions, including president of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) San Antonio City Wide Jr. Chapter. She also worked a part-time job. STEM-related topics have always intrigued her and she thoroughly enjoys the analytical approach and problem-solving it requires. She’s inspired by Vice President Kamala Harris and hopes to one day be a source of inspiration for other girls.
Ethan Johnson: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Tuskegee University
Ethan is from Manvel, TX, and attended Shadow Creek High School. In the fall, he’ll be attending Tuskegee University with plans to major in aerospace engineering. Throughout high school, he held many roles including tuba section leader of the marching band, National Honor Society member, and morning announcer. He was also involved in the youth ministry at his church. Ethan is inspired by W.E.B Du Bois and hopes to one day become an equally courageous and charismatic leader.
