 The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) celebrates its most recent class of 132 scholarship recipients, who are from 26 states and will be attending 26 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) this fall.

Kaylin Alexander: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Tuskegee University

Kayla is from Prattville, AL, and graduated with honors from Prattville High School. She is currently attending Tuskegee University as an electrical engineering major. She developed a strong interest in computer science in the 7th grade, where she learned the fundamentals of coding. By 8th grade, she built her first computer and discovered that engineering was her true passion. In the future, she plans to design and develop new technology.

Everett Mason, Jr.: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Tuskegee University

Everett is from Lorman, MS, and attended The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. He is currently attending Tuskegee University as a mechanical engineering major. In high school, he took on numerous leadership roles, including serving as the class president. His love for robotics led to his role as team captain of VEX Worlds. After receiving his mechanical engineering degree, he plans to obtain his master’s and doctorate degrees, specializing in robotics. Everett hopes to, one day,  inspire minority engineers and contribute to revolutionary robotics systems dedicated to improving the state of our world.

Laila Wood: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Tuskegee University

Laila is from Conyers, GA, and graduated from Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology, where she graduated in the top 5% of her class. She is currently attending Tuskegee University as a chemistry major. In high school, she had a rigorous STEM course load, including twelve Advanced Placement courses. She also prides herself on being a well-rounded student-athlete and plans to continue her softball career in college. She’s passionate about pursuing a STEM degree because it allows her to make a difference in the world.

Channing Wyatt: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Florida A&M University

Channing is from Stockbridge, GA, and graduated magna cum laude from Dutchtown High School. He is currently attending Florida A&M University as a mechanical engineering major. In high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society, served as vice president of the Dutchtown Ambassadors Program, and participated in school sports and athletic teams. He’s always had an interest in STEM and began attending STEM camps and taking high school math courses in middle school. He believes that his decision to attend FAMU will allow him to gain the exposure and experiences that he needs to make a positive impact in his community.
