The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) celebrates its most recent class of 132 scholarship recipients, who are from 26 states and are currently attending 26 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) this fall.

Olivia Fogel: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State University
Olivia is from Summerville, SC, and graduated from Ashley Ridge High School. She is currently a freshman at North Carolina A&T State University and majoring in bioengineering. She is passionate about pursing a degree in STEM because she desires to improve lives and make a difference in her community. Ultimately, she plans on using her degree to help improve current health care practices and technology worldwide.
Nyael Jones: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Florida A&M University
Nyael is from Miramar, FL, and graduated from McArthur High School. She is currently a freshman at Florida A&M University and majoring in biological systems engineering. She graduated in the top 1% of her high school class and was honored as a student leader in her district. She is pursuing STEM with the future goal of helping to solve and develop innovative ways to combat environmental issues.
Ryan Pennington: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State University
Ryan is from Beltsville, MD, and graduated with honors from St. Vincent Pallotti High School. During his high school career, he served in several leadership roles including Freshman Class President and Senior Class Treasurer. Ryan is currently a freshman at North Carolina A&T State University and majoring in mechanical engineering. In the future, he hopes to start a nonprofit organization that exposes kids in underprivileged areas to STEM and STEM careers.
Michael Wilmore: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Morgan State University
Michael is from Bear, DE, and attended William Penn High School. He is currently attending Morgan State University and majoring in civil engineering. During high school, he participated in several college prep programs that introduced him to networking and building important relationships. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he plans to become an engineer and further his education.
