Nanoscale Engineering: Pathways to Advanced Biotechnology I
Monday, October 29, 2012 - 2:00pm to 2:15pm
Self-organization of nanoparticles (NPs) and nanoscale objects represents one of the most dynamic areas of materials science. Better understanding of these phenomena is important from both fundamental and practical perspectives because nanoparticle self-organization processes
(1) identify similarities between biological and non-biological nanoscale species;
(2) lead to unusual optical properties from different combinations of nano- and microscale features;
(3) can potentially simplify manufacturing of electronic, photonic, and sensing devices.
In this presentation, the analogies between self-organized nanoparticle assemblies and viruses will be discussed and analyzed. We shall start with their thermodynamics and continue with the preparation of different NP assemblies resembling the structure and geometry of viruses. The individual NPs in the virus-like superstructures will be treated as an analog of a protein. Dynamic reorganization of NP superstructures will also be considered. The presentation will be concluded with parallels in the interactions of NP assemblies with cells and their utilization for drug delivery.
